Official servers are the ones in Rust's in-game Official tab: Facepunch's own and its partners', such as RustSpain. Rust Pop Watch keeps that list by hand, by hostname and address. Everything else is a community or modded server.
Right now 95,248 people are on a public Rust server, spread across 11,826 servers, with 753 more waiting in queues. The highest count today is 98,991, against a record of 145,095. That is the headline; below it is the rest of the story: the last day, the last months, and how those players split by game mode, modded or not, group size, gather rate, region and the freshness of the wipe. The figure at the top of the page is every player on a public Rust server, counted from what each server reports. It is refreshed every five minutes, so it moves a lot across a day. The busiest hour usually has more than twice the players of the quietest.
QWhy is this lower than Steam's player count?
A
Steam counts everyone with Rust open, including menus, loading screens and servers that do not list themselves publicly. This page counts only players on public servers, which is what lets us split them by server type. The difference is usually people between wipes or in the main menu.
QWhen is Rust busiest?
A
European evenings pull the biggest numbers, with a second bump when the US east coast comes online. The hourly chart shows the busiest hour in UTC, averaged over the last week. Australian evenings land in the UK morning, so the quietest stretch is often the middle of the European night.
QAre more people on modded or vanilla servers?
A
Modded servers hold more players in total, mostly because there are far more of them. The live split above shows the current share for each side. It shifts as servers report and as wipes land.
